Sexual Assault Prevention

Sexual assault researchers and advocates are proposing the following policies and practices as ways to reduce and eliminate sexual assault.

  • Increase womens' economic justice- livable wages, paid family care leave. etc.;
  • Develop home-visiting nurse programs focusing on preventing child abuse and other forms of family violence- acting as a primary prevention (early sexual experience is a risk factor for perpetration);
  • Develop and enforce workplace policies against violence against women;
  • Facilitate male peer groups to recognize male’s role in violence against women;
  • Implement school based curriculum targeting gender-role stereotyping, dating violence norms, conflict management skills, and help-seeking cognitive skills;
  • Educate the community about the prevalence, forms and effects of sexual violence;
  • Identify and promote healthy community norms that discourage sexual abuse, including norms from a diversity of cultures;
  • Ensure that crisis services are available to victims;
  • Develop and enforce social and legal sanctions to hold perpetrators accountable for their use of all forms of violence;
  • Improve health care’s identification of and response to violence against women;
  • Increase the utilization of services for victims and perpetrators of sexual violence;
  • And provide comprehensive and culturally/linguistically appropriate community-based support and services to all survivors across their lifespan.
